Dr. Masoumeh Velayati

Masoumeh Velayati received her BA, MA, and PhD from the universities of Tehran, Warwick, and York respectively. She has a multi-disciplinary educational background in Islam, religion, and social science with particular focus on development, gender, and Islamic feminism. Before joining the Al-Maktoum College, she has worked at the universities of York, Leeds, and Lancaster as well as the United Nations Association International Service, a development organisation recruiting skilled and motivated people to work in locally initiated and managed development projects in West Africa, Latin America and the Middle East.

She is the author of Islam, Gender and Development: Rural-Urban Migration of Women in Iran, Lexington Books, 2011.  She has published several articles and chapters in peer-reviewed journals and edited books.

Her research interests and expertise lie in the areas of Muslim women and paid and unpaid work. She would be interested in supervising research students on these topics of Islam in relation to women; migration (internal, international, and transnational, economic, cultural or political); development (national and/or international development and relations), and NGOs in the context of Europe, Iran, the Middle East, Central Asia, and the Caucasus.
