Doctors

Any students new to the area must register with a local doctor, usually referred to as a GP (General Practitioner). Healthcare is free in the UK; this includes consultations, surgery and emergency care for you and your family who accompany you here.

To register with a GP go to a surgery or medical centre and ask at the reception desk whether you can be accepted as a patient. In order to register you will have to complete some forms; please take all your relevant documents, medical cards and any other health information about you and/or your family with you to the medical centre. When you register you will have to make an appointment to see a GP.

If you wish to see a doctor of your own gender (i.e. a woman may wish only to see a female doctor) you must say so at this time. When you see the GP you will be asked for a brief medical history. This would include any medical conditions you may have such as diabetes or hypertension. The GP may take your blood pressure and a blood sample as these are routine procedures. You will have to pay for your medications, but these are available at reduced prices on prescription, they currently cost £3.00 for each drug.

Most of Dentists in Britain are no longer accepting NHS patients. However there are some and these can found in the yellow pages.

As soon as you arrive, register with a dentist. There are dentists who will accept private patients and you will have to pay for all treatment. In an emergency you can go to the Dental Hospital which has an emergency department. Be prepared to wait.
