Programmes & Courses

The Al-Maktoum College is an independent and international research-led college of higher education in Dundee, Scotland. All our postgraduate programmes (taught and research) are located in the Shaikh Hamdan Bin Rashid Graduate School.

We offer postgraduate programmes (1-year Taught Masters, PgC, PgD and 3-year MPhil and PhD).

Masters Programmes (MSc/MLitt)

There are eleven taught masters programmes to choose from:

These programmes are for 12 months, which involves two semesters of taught classes plus a research dissertation. The programmes may also be taken as the shorter PgDiploma (two semesters of classes, with no dissertation) or the PgCertificate (one semester of classes)

Our programmes are unique and innovative, quite distinct as stand-alone taught masters programmes, or as preparation for further research.

Research Programmes (MPhil/PhD)

We offer opportunities to undertake supervised research in many areas of the study of Islam and Muslims, at Masters (MPhil) or Doctoral (PhD) level.

The named research programmes that we offer to PhD are as follows:

  • MPhil/PhD in Islamic Studies
  • MPhil/PhD in Arabic and Islamic Studies
  • MPhil/PhD in Muslims, Globalisation and the West
  • MPhil/PhD in Bayt al-Maqdis and Jerusalem Studies
  • MPhil/PhD in Multiculturalism
  • MPhil/PhD in Islamic Education
  • MPhil/PhD in Islamic Law

The following programmes are subject to validation:

  • MPhil/PhD in Gender and Islam
  • MPhil/PhD in Development, Islam and the Muslim World
  • MPhil/PhD in Practical Ethics and Islam
  • MPhil/PhD in Islamic Ethics

Research and studies at the Al-Maktoum College are designed as post-orientalist, post-traditionalist, and multicultural, the approaches are interdisciplinary and multidisciplinary. Teaching and research at the College is of the highest standard, and we have a team of scholars with a range of areas of expertise in the field. We have close links with the University of Aberdeen which is among the UK’s top research universities, with 89% of its research activity recognised as being of international standard.

Students at the College on the taught postgraduate masters and the postgraduate research programmes are registered students of the University of Aberdeen. Students have full access to the range of facilities that are offered by the University of Aberdeen.
