A major aim of the Al-Maktoum College is to continue to serve the communities at local, national and international level. It is an important part of our work and we see our role as educators in a diverse and multicultural world. We also rent out space for meetings, workshops, and conferences.
The Al-Maktoum College works with numerous groups and organisations within this area. Below is a list of just a few of the organisations and events:
- Senior Pupil Conference: Islam and Multiculturalism in today’s world
- Multicultural Education Award: Dundee City Council Focus on Achievement
- St Josephs Primary School
As well as working with groups and organisations in our role as educators, the Al-Maktoum College also supports local Scottish groups and charities. This is done through the Community Service Committee, which is a special fund to support community groups and charities in Dundee and the surrounding area. The awards aim to help many different groups who might not otherwise be able to fulfil their objectives.
There are criteria to meet when applying to the Community Service Committee. Each project must encompass at least one of the following elements:
- Learning
- Education
- Multiculturalism
- Cultural Engagement
- Local schools and other education institutions
- Youth development
- Interfaith
- Opportunities for the disabled
- Pursuit of excellence
- Excellence over adversity
- Local groups at the grass roots level that enrich the community
The Community Services Fund does not consider financial support for projects for which there is currently statutory or local authority provision or responsibility for the funding lies at the statutory or local authority level; or for political organisations or related political activity, pressure groups or related organisations.
The Community Services Fund primarily focuses on projects within Dundee and a 25-mile radius around the city including St Andrews, Perth and Brechin. However, applications for exceptional projects from other parts of Scotland will also be considered.
Since February 2009 the Community Services Fund has made donations totalling £35,090 to 22 various projects mainly in the Dundee area. Each new project that is successful in securing funding from the Community Services Fund will receive a small plaque bearing the logo of the Al-Maktoum College and the name of the Community Services Fund for display on their premises:
