Female students from the UAE and Qatar visited Dundee College today (Friday, June 25) for a taster session in traditional Scottish baking.
They are among a 36-strong party here for a three-week Summer School organised by the city’s Al-Maktoum Institute.
“This visit to Dundee College for a taste of Scottish baking is always popular with the students,” said Professor Malory Nye, Principal of the Institute. “We are extremely grateful to the College for arranging for these sessions.”
This is the seventh such Summer School and the 10th visit of UAE students to Scotland in all when the Institute’s Academic Training Programmes, held in January/February, are taken into account.
The students, from eight different colleges and universities in the UAE and Qatar, plus eight chaperones arrived earlier this week, bringing the total of female students from the UAE to visit the city in the past seven years to almost 350.
The Institute estimates the twice-yearly visits represent a £200,000 boost to the local Dundee economy.
It’s the third year running that Summer School students have been invited to the College for a master class where prize-winning, lecturer chef, Walter McCrindle shares his baking expertise. The Summer School – focused on learning about Scotland and in particular the history, culture, and traditions of Scotland in the contemporary world – also includes visits to Scone Palace, Glamis Castle and the city’s Verdant Works.
