New Honorary Professor

The Al-Maktoum Institute in Dundee has appointed the painter and printmaker, George Donald, currently Keeper of the Royal Scottish Academy Collection, as an Honorary Professor.

George Donald enjoys an international reputation and has exhibited in galleries in the UK and overseas regularly since 1968.

His work can be viewed in prestigious locations such as the V&A in London, the Miro Foundation in Spain as well as the RSA in Edinburgh.

Trained at Edinburgh College of Art and Hornsey College of Art with a postgraduate degree from Edinburgh University, George Donald has been a visiting professor in several countries including the United Arab Emirates and the US.

Born in South India in 1943, he has worked in that country for the British Council as well as Korea. He taught for many years within the D&P School of Edinburgh College of Art (eca), and in 1999 he co-founded the Centre for Continuing Studies at the college – a centre for innovation and excellence in higher art education, and the first to offer part-time BA degrees in Visual Arts.

He has been a member of the RSA for over 20 years and six years ago was elected Keeper. Recent commissions have included equine portrait paintings for Dubai’s Jockey Club.

Institute Principal, Professor Malory Nye said he was extremely pleased that Mr Donald had accepted the invitation to become an Honorary Professor.

“George Donald is an exceptionally talented individual whose skills have been recognised and appreciated both here and abroad,” said Professor Nye.

“We are extremely fortunate and very pleased, indeed, that he has agreed to accept this position of Honorary Professor and I’m sure we will all benefit from his involvement with the Institute. George will contribute to the research culture of the Al-Maktoum Institute, along with giving some occasional classes and workshops to students.”
