A Taste of Multiculturalism for Dundee Youngsters

Children from two Dundee primary schools enjoyed a multicultural workshop hosted by the city’s Al-Maktoum Institute for Arabic and Islamic Studies yesterday.(Wed, August 13.)

They tasted different foods, made bracelets and played games during the three-hour event, which was aimed at helping increase their awareness of good citizenship and different types of communities.

The 17 children, aged from five years of age up to 12-year-olds from Blackness and St Joseph Primaries, are in the BJs Fun Club and were accompanied by six helpers. “We wanted the children to have fun while developing some understanding of multiculturalism,” said Annemarie Smith, communications officer for the Institute. “We looked at some different cultural and religious beliefs including festivals through discussion, games, art and food. They linked into websites and tucked into pitta bread, so it was all very educational and enjoyable.”
