Summer School Ends with Special Ceremony

A ceremony to mark the conclusion of a two-week Summer School for 30 female students from the United Arab Emirates was held at the Al-Maktoum Institute for Arabic and Islamic Studies today. (July 14, 2008.)

HE Mirza Al-Sayegh, Chairman of the Institute’s Board, Dr Hanif Hassan Ali, UAE Minister of Education, Dundee’s Lord Provost John Letford and the Vice Chancellors from three UAE universities whose students have been on the visit, were among the guests.

During their time in Scotland, the students visited Dundee’s City Chambers, The Scottish Parliament, Loch Ness, Glamis Castle, The University of Aberdeen, Dundee College and other places of interest. And, of course, they have found time for shopping.

“We are delighted that the students have enjoyed their stay so much and learned a lot about the country’s history, culture and people,” said Professor Malory Nye, the Institute’s Acting Principal. “We feel we have been showcasing Scotland and now we hope the students will go home as ‘ambassadors’ for the country ready to convince people in the UAE to make Scotland a holiday destination. The Institute has been involved in successfully linking Dundee and Dubai and we are convinced the Summer School has played its part in bringing the city and the whole of Scotland to the attention of potential UAE visitors.”
