Al-Maktoum Institute Announces Latest Honorary Fellowships

The Al-Maktoum Institute for Islamic and Arabic Studies in Dundee will add two more names to its list of Honorary Fellowships today. (Thursday, Feb 14, 2008.)

At its Graduation Ceremony, the Rt. Rev Vincent Logan, Bishop of Dunkeld and David Whitton, MSP for Strathkelvin and Bearsden will be receiving their Honorary Fellowships from Acting Principal of the Institute, Professor Malory Nye. “We are delighted to confer the Honorary Fellowships on these two individuals who have shown great support and friendship to the Institute over the years as we work to achieve our vision for multiculturalism,” said Professor Nye. “The Rt. Rev Logan, who celebrated his Silver Jubilee as Bishop of Dunkeld two years ago, is widely regarded and respected as a great ambassador for both the Catholic Church and the city of Dundee. He was Scotland’s youngest Bishop when appointed in 1981 and his concern for the community in its widest sense has been consistent.

“His contributions to the aims and developments of the Institute have been outstanding. David Whitton started his career in print journalism in Dundee before moving into broadcasting and then public relations. Always interested in politics, he became special adviser to the late Donald Dewar, Scotland’s first First Minister and now represents the Strathkelvin and Bearsden constituency of the Scottish Parliament where he has lived for over 20 years. He was also PR adviser to the Institute for four years before becoming an MSP, showing tireless support for what we are striving to achieve. We are extremely pleased to recognise the significant achievement of both these men by granting each of them an Honorary Fellowship.”

The Graduation Ceremony will also mark the conclusion of the three-week visit of female students from the UAE on an academic training programme.
