Dr Pia Beckmann, the Lord Mayor of Wurzburg, the German city twinned with Dundee is spending two days in Scotland attending the summer school organised by the Al-Maktoum Institute.
Dr Beckmann has been invited to give a talk to the 39 students from the Gulf States who are attending the summer school to study multiculturalism and leadership.
She will be addressing the students on the role of women in politics in Germany and discussing her own achievement in being elected as Mayor.
Earlier this year she was one of the key speakers at the “Women as Global Leaders” conference, organised by Zayed University in Abu Dhabi.
While in Dundee Dr Beckmann will also be having discussions about the ongoing relationship between Al-Maktoum Institute and the city of Wurzburg who signed a joint agreement last year.
On Friday July 7 she will take part in the memorial service being held at the Institute to mark the anniversary of the London bombings.
Later on Friday she will be joined by Dundee’s Lord Provost, John Letford at a “Tartan Tea party” when members of staff from the Institute will be presented with gifts made from the Al-Maktoum tartan that was rediscovered earlier this year.
Professor Abd al-Fattah El-Awaisi, Principal of Al-Maktoum Institute said, “We’re very grateful that a busy person such as Dr Beckmann has taken the time to come to Scotland to give a talk to the students. Last year she sent us a message by DVD but this time the students will have the opportunity to meet and talk with her in person. I’m confident they will learn a lot from her experiences as a woman involved in public life in Germany.”
Also attending the tea party are members of the Institute Council. Entertainment is being provided by local singer/songwriter, Laura McGhee and the Tartan Café are doing the catering.
