Top Academic On Fact Finding Visit

The medical schools at Dundee and Aberdeen Universities could be set to benefit from the links between Scotland and Dubai in the United Arab Emirates.

Professor George Carruthers, Dean of the Medical School at Al Ain in the UAE is visiting both as part of a fact finding mission organised by Dundee’s Al-Maktoum Institute. Professor Carruthers spent yesterday (Thursday April 21) at Aberdeen University and will tour the Dundee Medical school today.

He was also the guest of honour at a dinner in Dundee last night. His trip was arranged by Al-Maktoum Institute who enjoy close links with Al Ain University. Their degrees are also verified through Aberdeen University’s school of theology.

Professor Abd al-Fattah El-Awaisi, principal of Al-Maktoum Institute said: “We are delighted to welcome Professor Carruthers to Scotland. The UAE are looking to establish partnerships with Scottish universities in order to help with the training of their medical students and those training in other health disciplines. We’re very hopeful of a positive outcome from the visit that will be of benefit to both Scotland and the Emirates.”

At Aberdeen Professor Carruthers was met by Professor Mike Greaves, Head of the School of Medicine and taken on a tour of the Institute of Medical Sciences, the computer assisted learning unit and the College of Life Sciences and Medicine.

Today (Friday) he will visit the Dundee University medical school within Ninewells Hospital where he will tour the accident and emergency department, the Tayside Institute for Child Health and the Clinical Surgical Skills area.

He will also be given an e-health demonstration in the Clinical Technology Centre. Professor Carruthers is the first leading medical academic to visit Scotland from the Emirates.
