A party of six young teenagers from Dubai in the United Arab Emirates are making their first trip to Scotland to take part in Dundee’s Youth Festival.
They arrived in the city yesterday (Thursday) for the festival which is taking place this weekend. The youngsters were invited by Dundee’s Lord Provost John Letford because of the sister city agreement with Dubai that was signed last year, as a result of links established through Al-Maktoum Institute in Dundee.
They will join with nearly 800 local youngsters from groups, organisations and clubs and representatives of Dundee’s other twin cities – Wurzburg, Germany, Orleans, France and Alexandria in the USA.
During their stay the group from Dubai will also visit Al-Maktoum Institute in Blackness Road.
Institute principal Professor Abd al-Fattah El-Awaisi said:” The youngsters are really excited to be in Dundee and Scotland to see for themselves a different culture. “One of the main aims of the sister city agreement between Dundee and Dubai is to encourage exchanges like this as it helps to promote multiculturalism and a greater understanding of different ways of life. “I know they will go back to Dubai having had a wonderful experience in Dundee and that may encourage others to come and pay the city a visit.”
