Dundee’s Al-Maktoum Institute for Arabic and Islamic Studies has signed its first memorandum of understanding with another European-based University.
The agreement with the prestigious Johann Wolfgang Goethe-University in Frankfurt follows a series of meetings involving senior staff from both institutions. The signing ceremony took place in the office of Mr Rudolph Steinberg, who is President of Frankfurt University. He was accompanied by Professor Andreas Gold and Professor Jurgen Bereiter-Hahn, his vice-presidents, the University Chancellor, Dr Wolfgang Busch and Mr John Skillen, head of the University’s International office. Signing on behalf of the Al-Maktoum Institute was Mr Mirza Al-Sayegh, chairman of its Board of Directors who was accompanied by Professor Abd al-Fattah El-Awaisi, principal and vice-chancellor of the Institute, Mr Mohamed Obeid Bin Ghannam, secretary general of the Al-Maktoum Foundation and the UAE’s Ambassador in Germany, Mr Ali al-Zaruny.
The agreement will be for an initial three-year period and recognises the importance of academic cooperation between the universities involving both staff and students.
